Design patterns are guidelines not instructions...
Just because ten thousand clowns in IT write code a certain way, doesn't make it correct. It may make it OK where mediocrity is the norm. Likewise, if you don't learn something new every single day, even stuff distant from your primary job focus, you will never understand the big picture. You will become bored and will start thinking in patterns...
