The Trend of IT Conferences becoming Free...

Industry analyst firms such as Gartner are faced with yet another threat and that is conferences are starting to become free...

It has been a very, very, very long time since I have paid to attend a conference. Various industry magazines such as InformationWeek, Infoworld and sys-con (Publishers of Java Developers Journal) have all made their conferences for free. This week alone, I will be attending the TechForum in NYC and the Tulsa Tech Fest in Tulsa which are also free to attendees.

Maybe someone could provide insight as to why folks are still dumb enough to pay to attend conferences? I wonder if all the idiots that are still paying only attend conferences sponsored by Tim O'Reilly?
