Multiprotocol Network Attached Storage

I find it curious that storage vendors haven't figured out ways to keep security consistent at the file level when Apple, Linux and Windows are all accessing the same share. Sure, we understand that Unix/Linux uses the umask/chmod paradigm and its differences between Windows ACLs, but how come these things can't be mapped to each other so that security of files stay consistent?
