Enterprise Architecture and Astronauts

Abstraction in many situations is beneficial, but when you over-abstract, you go too far up and run out of oxygen. Sometimes us enterprise architects keep things at such a high-level, we don't know when to stop and create absurd, all-encompassing high-level pictures of the universe that are all good and fine but don't actually mean anything at all.

Maybe folks such as Joel Spolsky, James Robertson, David Heinemeier Hansson, Escape from Cubicle Nation and others have managed to plant the seed in terms of keeping our own internal conversations more honest. Keep up the good work. Now only if they could keep the likes of Robert McIlree and others who provide consulting services in the enterprise architecture space but are not enterprise architects...
