Why some of my friends aren't getting job offers

I have noticed a trend amongst my unemployed friends and figured I would share my thoughts publicly...

Here are five of the worst practices I have observed:

1. Failure to send thank you notes. This is simply forgetting to be human.

2. Not do much research on the employer, their business and most importantly the interviewees. Nowadays, LinkedIn makes this very easy. Not doing so is simply being lazy.

3. Not picking up on certain obvious queues. We live in a world where increasingly competency is less important than soft skills. Not paying attention to perception management is the best way to fail at perception management.

4. Thinking that the people you have worked with will give you great references. Just because someone smiles and has a conversation doesn't mean that they are your friend. This especially applies in the Northeast where politeness is almost never genuine.

5. Thinking that credentials trump networking. It is not what you know, but who you know. If you want that job, you better know somebody...
